Resumen del editor

Information is everything in "Hard-Boiled Wonderland". A specialist encrypter is attacked by thugs with orders from an unknown source, is chased by invisible predators, and dates an insatiably hungry librarian who never puts on weight. In "The End of the World" a new arrival is learning his role as dream-reader. But there is something eerily disquieting about the changeless nature of the town and its fable-like inhabitants. Told in alternate chapters, the two stories converge and combine to create a novel that is surreal, beautiful, thrilling, and extraordinary.

Two non-parallel stories

For those of us who find Murakami intriguing, and have only read two or three of his works, this represents another step in another direction. Here, the author gives us two stories that combine and get closer until they collide in the end, in an ending which may be not what we expected but is, nevertheless, exciting and satisfying.

The two stories, which, at the beginning seem disparate ones, begin to get more and more points in common, first by suspicion, then by clear similarities. The first one concerns a happy-go-lucky man with a secretive job, in a mysterious Tokyo where strange things happen. The second story, where a worried man appears in a town and loses his shadow (by sectioning, that is, the Gatekeeper cuts it from him), is lyrical and there is no place for happiness or laughter. All your needs are taken care of, he is given a job, whose explanation comes at the end of the novel, and everyone lives not unhappily, but, also, not happily. The inhabitants have no mind. Those who keep their minds have to live in the woods. A nice metaphor for life, indeed.

The adventures the two main characters go through (and which we enjoy) make for great listening. The work of the two readers is excellent.
