Layla had always been a good student. She’d made straight A’s for the most part, and she had acclimated well to university life. That was until she met her English professor, Joan. Joan was a hard ass. She was set in her ways, and she expected all of her students to do exactly as she said. To be honest, she was more fit for the military than a university. Even still, Layla had managed to make decent grades for the most part in Joan’s class.

Then one day, Joan tells her she is going to fail the class if she doesn’t take a very special project. To say Layla was confused would be an understatement. None of her previous grades in the class suggested that she was remotely close to failing. However, she knew Joan had a “special” grading system, and none of the students understood how it actually worked, so she believed her. She could take on a special project. She was the kind of student who would do extra credit. Layla liked university work and was never bothered by having hours of homework that kept her from going out with her friends. What were a few more hours of homework if it meant she’d be able to pass Joan’s class? But the special project wasn’t something that Layla could learn about in a workbook; no amount of studying would prepare her for what Joan had in store. Was a passing grade worth all of the work that Joan expected her to put in?
