Parecchi decenni prima dell'avvento della psicanalisi, Poe indaga con sapienza e intuizione la mente dell'uomo e sa che la paura non è condizionata soltanto da fattori esterni, ma può venire da uno stato interiore. Il senso di angoscia e paura è presente in tutto il racconto. Il protagonista, che è anche il narratore, sposa una donna molto intelligente di nome Morella.
