This historical novel, winner of the inaugural International Prize for Arabic Fiction, has been translated into English, Norwegian, and Greek and is widely circulated. Set against the backdrop of the Egyptian Urabi anti-British and anti-feudal national revolution of the latter half of the 19th century, and situated in the western border town of Siwa Oasis, the novel uses literary techniques to depict the tumultuous life of the real historical figure, Colonel Mahmoud Azmi.
This "anti-heroic" ordinary man is a microcosm of the vast middle class who harbor dreams of national rejuvenation yet suffer from harsh realities. His experiences reflect the new ethnic, racial, and religious conflicts that Arabs encounter in the wave of globalization.
Please Note: This audiobook is in Mandarin Chinese.
