Acerca de este título

Discover the devastating history of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake...

When the residents of the city of San Francisco settled down for the night on Tuesday, April 17, 1906, they had many reasons to feel optimistic. In the space of less than 50 years, San Francisco had transformed itself from a remote outpost to become the commercial metropolis of the Pacific Coast, a thriving trade center of America’s West Coast. The completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869 made travel between America’s East and West Coasts practicable, rapid, and reliable for the first time. Goods flowing into San Francisco from Asia and the Pacific Rim could be distributed across the United States, while manufactured goods from the East Coast made the journey in the opposite direction for sale in Japan and China. By 1900, San Francisco had become America’s eighth-largest city, and over 20% of the total population of the three West Coast states (California, Oregon, and Washington) lived there.

But by the time that the sun rose on Wednesday, April 18, the city was in ruins, devastated by the worst earthquake ever experienced in the United States. Then it began to burn as ruptured gas mains caught fire. Within three days, around 80% of all structures in the city had been destroyed or seriously damaged by the earthquake and subsequent fires. San Francisco was abruptly transformed from a bustling metropolis into a desolate sea of smoldering ruins. This is the incredible story of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.
