But by the time that the sun rose on Wednesday, April 18, the city was in ruins, devastated by the worst earthquake ever experienced in the United States. Then it began to burn as ruptured gas mains caught fire. Within three days, around 80% of all structures in the city had been destroyed or seriously damaged by the earthquake and subsequent fires.
