In this sequel to If Only for This Life, private investigator Sammy Kidman takes on a challenge from reality star Abby Max in order to force her to pay back child support for her autistic son. Because her TV ratings are flagging, she offers to pay twice her past-due support if he will compete with her on her reality show. Because Sammy has received previous help from the Dallas billionaire Fletcher Streiker, Sammy consults him about whether he should do this. Streiker replies: "If you fail, will it have been worth it?” Sammy decides that it would be. He signs a contract with Abby and begins intense training, as she is in superior physical condition. The challenge is an obstacle course which will be broadcast live.
Freakishly, Sammy wins, which only inflames Abby's desire for revenge. She demands a rematch, which he declines. Then she drafts another contestant for a stunt that is so dangerous, she almost dies. By that time, Sammy is so embroiled in her situation that he becomes a target for the monsters she has been harboring. Not only is he endangered, but so is his wife Marni. Fletcher and Adair Streiker then step in on behalf of the Kidmans, and Abby herself. The story concludes in Today and Forever.
