He also greatly expanded presidential powers as he grappled with the exigencies of an unprecedented war among the states. Despite his death by an assassin’s bullet five days after the Confederates surrendered at Appomattox, Abraham Lincoln helped define the concept of democratic self-government—not just in the United States but around the world—perhaps more so than any American president.
