Franklin James is left broken when his daughter, Evelyn, is snatched from their home in the dead of night by a gang of hooded figures. Amongst those enlisted to find her is Ewan Childs, Evelyn’s unrequited love. Their search takes them to the darkest reaches of Wildermoor into the clutches of The Council of Eternal Light, a band of clergymen shunned by their community and new Parliament. After the failure to convict Colin Dexler, a man accused of a most brutal and motiveless murder, DI Truman Darke’s career appears to have hit a wall.
