Pach argues that wealthy collectors and museums too often treat art as a prestige commodity, pouring money into established European masterpieces while offering far less support to living artists. At the same time, many American painters and sculptors remain trapped in academic imitation, reproducing inherited styles rather than responding honestly to the energy of modern American life.
Yet Pach finds signs of a more authentic national aesthetic in unexpected places. Steel bridges, skyscrapers, machines, and everyday industrial objects achieve beauty precisely because their forms follow function.
