Long before any creature called it home, the Whispering Wood had learned to speak. It spoke in the silver trembling of birch leaves, in the low creak of roots beneath the earth, and in the patient tapping of rain upon hollow trunks. Its language had no alphabet, yet every animal understood some part of it. The deer knew the warning hidden in a sudden silence. The rabbits read the soft grammar of tracks. The foxes listened to the wind for news from distant clearings. And the birds, who carried the sky in their wings, heard more voices than any of them.
At the heart of the forest stood an oak older than memory. Storms had broken three of its highest limbs, lightning had blackened one side of its trunk, and generations of claws had polished the bark around its deepest hollows. Still, each spring the oak unfolded thousands of green leaves as though it had never known winter. Its roots reached beneath fern beds, burrows, stones, and secret streams, binding many lives together where no eye could see.
High in the fork of that oak, beneath a roof of leaves, a family of thrushes had built their nest. Orin, the father, chose each supporting twig with patient care.
