At seventeen, I made a decision that would change the course of my life. I enlisted in the United States Army through the Delayed Entry Program. One year later, I left home to begin the demanding journey from civilian teenager to American soldier.

From more than a thousand pushups during my brutal first days at Fort Dix to learning the precision work of a 44E machinist and metalworker at Aberdeen Proving Ground, I quickly discovered that Army life would test my strength, discipline, and determination.

My six years of service took me from South Korea and the edge of the Demilitarized Zone to the Atlantic coast of Virginia, the changing landscape of post-Cold War Germany, and Fort Riley, Kansas. Along the way, I repaired tanks, amphibious cargo vehicles, and critical military equipment, participated in major training exercises, endured separation and personal loss, formed lasting friendships, and rose to the rank of Sergeant, E-5.

From Civilian to Soldier is an honest and personal military memoir about far more than uniforms, awards, and duty stations. It is a story of growing up, learning responsibility, overcoming mistakes, adapting to unexpected challenges, and discovering the pride that comes from serving others.

Supported by certificates and military records from my service, this memoir preserves the experiences that shaped the soldier I became and the man I remained long after leaving the Army.
