Mary Pearl T is a fantastic storyteller. She tells story after story about her sponsorship experiences. Most of the stories, the hilarious ones, are about her experiences being sponsored. Rule 62 Style, not taking herself too seriously. (She doesn't share stories about others that might embarrass them.) There is plenty of practical advice too. From the Text: I maintain the anonymity and confidentiality of those I sponsor.Keep what you hear in the confidence. Let it be between you and them. And be tolerant of mistakes. Think how many mistakes you've made. And another insightful passage: I do little things to show the person being sponsored that they're a person of worth. That means sometimes I call them and check on them. Sometimes I send them a little card of encouragement. You know, just not making it all, you gotta call me and you gotta call me here and there and do whatever, but to let them know they're a person, because most of us when we get here, our self-esteem is pretty low. Because we have tried to do something we were not equipped to do and we feel like failures. It's like in understanding ourselves, it says we tried to solve the problem. We weren't up to it, we weren't clever enough, not pretty enough, not smart enough to solve the problem for the one we love. We thought it was something we did or didn't do. And I got that message loud and clear. When I would say, Why did you do this? He'd say, It's because you did do that or because you didn't do that. And then all of a sudden now you think, With that I have accepted responsibility.for what someone else has done. And so I felt very much a failure because I couldn't get him to love me enough not to drink. That was how I felt. And she says of ACOA (Adult Children of Alcoholics): I have to tell them at some point you have to give up all hope of a better childhood.Because it ain't going to happen here. You're going to have to put the past in the past, let it go.©2026 Thomas Laperriere (P)2026 Thomas Laperriere Adicción y recuperación Psicología y salud mental
