An English honeymoon couple travelling through Nuremberg fall in with a loud, swaggering American from Nebraska, a man full of frontier stories and cheerful cruelty. On the ramparts of the old city, he drops a small stone over the wall, meaning only to tease a cat playing with her kitten below. The stone kills the kitten.
What the cat does next, and how she follows them through the streets of the medieval town, is only the beginning. Their final stop is the torture chamber, where the Iron Maiden of Nuremberg stands waiting, and where the American insists on climbing inside for a joke.
First published in 1893, The Squaw is one of Bram Stoker’s most notorious short stories: a brutal, grimly ironic tale of casual cruelty repaid in full, from the author of Dracula. It remains one of the most shocking horror stories of the Victorian era.
