Milton J. Galfas’ novel, The Milton Directive, explores the fear, confusion, and conspiracies occasioned by a virus that has somehow leaked its way from some lab and into the general public. While security agencies hunt for the truth and how to prevent more deaths, there’s a group busy covering their tracks, and caught in the middle is Milton, who, along with his daughter Jessy, needs to find out why he’s suddenly under suspicion. Most importantly, they have to uncover where the virus came from, even if it puts their lives at risk.
When a protagonist is pulled from their status quo and thrust into a world they barely know, forced to play a game rigged against them, the stakes remain high, resulting in a captivating read for the reader. That happens here. Milton is far from being Jason Bourne. He’s funny, forever a loving dad, and you guessed it, he’s not much of a fighter. Yet he’s out there slipping through cracks, much to the surprise of those tailing him. So much so that they think he’s something else entirely, maybe a spy.
There’s a lot to enjoy about this book. The plot is fast-paced, action-packed, and raises more questions, especially in the beginning. Such as why Milton? What does he know that he’s not telling us? And who’re these people after him? More importantly, where did the virus come from? If Chantel is patient zero, where did she get infected? Gradually, all these questions unraveled. In a nutshell, just as the characters try to unravel the conundrum, so do the readers.
