Searchers after horror haunt strange, far places. But the true connoisseur of terror, Lovecraft tells us, goes to the lonely farmhouses of backwoods New England, where ancient and solitary things have been left to ripen in the dark.
Caught in a thunderstorm on a deserted road in the Miskatonic Valley, a traveller takes shelter in a sagging, filthy house that seems abandoned. Inside he finds a single book open on the table: an old illustrated account of the Congo, its pages worn by frequent handling, and the binding broken at one particular plate. The plate shows a butcher’s shop of the Anzique cannibals. Then the owner of the house comes down the stairs, very old and very friendly, and eager to talk about his favourite picture.
Written in 1920, The Picture in the House is the story that introduced Lovecraft’s Arkham country and the Miskatonic Valley. It is a short, perfectly controlled masterpiece of New England gothic and one of the most quietly horrifying tales in weird fiction.
