Have you ever sat in front of a PC that should be fast enough to run a game, but somehow, the game just doesn’t feel right?
Maybe it doesn’t run smoothly enough. Maybe you experience frame drops, stuttering, or input delay. Or maybe you’re trying to figure out which hardware you actually need without spending money on things that don’t matter to you.
I’ve been playing games on PCs since the days of Windows 3.11, starting with a computer that had just eight megabytes of RAM. Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out how computers work, why games sometimes run poorly, and what you can do to get a better gaming experience.
In this book, I’m sharing my experience and perspective to help you understand what matters when you build, buy, configure, or upgrade a gaming PC.
We’ll look at things like:
- Understanding performance: FPS, frame times, frame-time consistency, input latency, monitor refresh rates, and what these things actually mean for your gaming experience.
- Finding out what kind of gamer you are:** Whether you play competitive shooters, graphically demanding games, or older classics, your needs should influence what you buy.
- Choosing your hardware: Graphics cards, processors, storage, monitors, mice, keyboards, headsets, and other things to consider when building your setup.
- Setting up and maintaining your PC: Drivers, Windows settings, performance monitoring, troubleshooting, temperatures, and keeping your system running as you want it to.
- Optimizing your games: Graphics settings, upscaling, latency-reduction features, and different ways to test whether your changes actually make a difference.
- Building or buying a PC: Explore the differences between custom-built computers, prebuilt systems, gaming laptops, compact PCs, and more unusual designs.
We’ll also talk about something I think is important: you don’t always need the newest hardware or the most expensive setup to enjoy PC gaming.
