Acerca de este título
In the twilight of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a young cavalry officer is invited to a dance at the home of a rich landowner.
There - with a small act of attempted charity - he commits a simple faux pas. But from this seemingly insignificant blunder comes a tale of catastrophe arising from kindness and of honour poisoned by self-regard.
Beware of Pity has all the intensity and the formidable sense of torment and of character of the very best of Zweig's work. Definitive translation by the award-winning Anthea Bell.

What struck me most is how the book pushed me to examine the difference between pity and compassion. Before reading it, I hadn’t truly thought about where one ends and the other begins. Through the story’s nuanced emotional conflicts, Zweig shows how pity can slip into something hollow or self-serving, even when we believe we’re acting kindly. And at the same time, he shows how genuine compassion requires honesty, courage, and a willingness to understand another person rather than simply soothe our own conscience.
The emotional tension throughout the novel made these ideas feel incredibly real, not theoretical, but lived. I found myself questioning my own instincts: When do I help someone because I care, and when do I do it because I’m uncomfortable with their suffering? When does kindness become avoidance? The book doesn’t hand out easy answers; instead, it invites the reader to sit with uncomfortable truths.
Overall, Beware of Pity is a beautifully written, thought-provoking story that reshaped how I understand two words I thought I knew. It’s a book that makes you reflect on the weight of your choices, the intentions behind your kindness, and the emotional responsibility we carry toward one another. I’m genuinely grateful for the way it made me think and feel.
