In December 1982, I met Ray at a coffee evening in Pimlico, and our differences in race and background immediately drew me to him, sparking a deep connection that would shape the next 17 years of my life. Ray, with his roots in Detroit and my own in Glasgow, became my close friend, mentor, and teacher, challenging my perceptions of race, spirituality, and leadership. Our bond was strengthened through our shared experiences in The Mastery workshops and our mutual desire to serve others. When Ray was diagnosed with HIV in 1993, I stood by him as he faced the challenges it brought, and as his health declined, I found myself taking on the role of support and truth-teller in his final days. Our relationship was a journey of learning, growth, and profound connection, and when the end came in 1999, we both suffered and celebrated the richness of our time together.
