The latest hauling assignment for the interstellar freight transport Amani Dragon takes it into an extended transit through exo-space in order to minimize travel time to a particularly distant destination.During the cruise, Captain Hol Morcott, operating on his pet theory that 'idle hands mean no profit,' puts all hands on a another of his periodic rigorous inspection of the ship's systems. When internal power is inexplicably lost, the already exhausted crew are tasked with finding and fixing the issue. Chief pilot Dal Rand and Venusian navigator Vekh are sent to the hold to check the status of the living cargo – potentially violent creatures that are kept docile for the transit inside internally lighted casings. They find one case open and the creature missing. Tracking it down seems impossible, as it is literally invisible in the Stygian darkness of the hold. Discovering in the wall, they realize that the escaped creature may have entered the narrow gap between the Dragon’s inner and outer hulls. Should it punch through the either hull, the results could prove disastrous.©2026 Mark Barnard (P)2026 Mark Barnard Ciencia ficción Space Opera
