It has been over ten years since I began working on the first edition of this book, titled Deep Living: Transforming Your Relationship to Everything That Matters through the Enneagram, to provide a new way to understand the challenges and possibilities associated with the sometimes difficult task of being human. 

The increasing pace of change during the last decade has made it even more difficult to stay connected to ourselves and experience our truer nature.... In these unpredictable times, rife with environmental, political, societal, and cultural upheavals, the energy of the external world has become so intense that we may absorb it unintentionally. 

With the growth of the internet, the acquisition of human knowledge has accelerated beyond our wildest imaginations, currently doubling every 13 months on average and predicted to soon double every 12 hours. The turmoil and uncertainty accompanying these monumental changes undermine our ability to be self-aware — in touch with ourselves as human beings — to connect to our hearts, and to act in ways beneficial to ourselves and the world.
