El coronel no tiene quien le escriba fue escrita por Gabriel García Márquez durante su estancia en París, adonde había llegado como corresponsal de prensa y con la secreta intención de estudiar cine, a mediados de los años cincuenta. El cierre del periódico para el que trabajaba le sumió en la pobreza, mientras redactaba en tres versiones distintas esta excepcional novela, que fue rechazada por varios editores antes de su publicación.
Tras el barroquismo faulkneriano de La hojarasca, esta segunda novela supone un paso hacia la ascesis, hacia la economía expresiva, y el estilo del escritor se hace más puro y transparente. Se trata también de una historia de injusticia y violencia: un viejo coronel retirado va al puerto todos los viernes a esperar la llegada de la carta oficial que responda a la justa reclamación de sus derechos por los servicios prestados a la patria. Pero la patria permanece muda.

However, as a Colombian book, I couldn’t help but notice that the narration felt more Mexican in tone due to Canales’ accent and delivery. While this doesn’t detract from the quality of the performance, I found myself missing that distinct Colombian flavor I was hoping for—those unique regional inflections and cultural nuances that would have grounded the story even more in its roots.
That said, there’s a silver lining to this. The more Mexican-leaning narration gives the audiobook a broader, more international appeal, making it resonate across various Latin American contexts. It feels like a story that could belong anywhere in the region, which is a positive in terms of accessibility. Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that it lacked a bit of that authentic Colombian essence I was craving.
Overall, I’d highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who loves García Márquez’s work or is looking for a beautifully narrated story. It’s a 4.5 out of 5 for me—fantastic, but just shy of perfect due to the cultural mismatch in the narration.
