Forged in Cadence is a mental and physical training manual for men who have repeatedly tried, and quit, running. It argues that failure isn't a character flaw but a predictable result of running without the right system.
Part I diagnoses the problem: the untrained mind. It identifies "the Negotiator", the internal voice that manufactures reasonable-sounding excuses to stop, and shows how quitting on a run reinforces quitting everywhere else in life. Running is framed as a mirror that strips away distractions and forces a man to confront his own mental weakness.
Part II introduces the solution: cadence. Drawing on a century of military marching tradition, it teaches runners to synchronize their footstrike to a steady beat (165–180 BPM), which short-circuits the Negotiator, activates a dopamine reward loop, and makes sustained effort neurologically easier. Breath control and mental "formation-holding", noticing thoughts without following them, are layered on top to build a complete system.
Part III describes what consistent practice produces: a flow state called "the Lock-In," where stride, breath, and cadence converge and the mental noise goes quiet. This isn't chased, it's earned through accumulated reps.
Part IV extends the method beyond running into daily life, framing the discipline built on the road as transferable to work, relationships, and identity.
The book positions Metal Cadence (metalcadence.com) as the purpose-built music platform that delivers the cadence system in practice.
