There are stories from the Spanish-American, Mexican-American, Cajun, Ozark, and other tranditions.

Old favorites such as "Mary Calhoun" and "The Vanishing Hitchhiker" are here, along with the ghostly mother who keeps her baby supplied with milk, the haunted mansion which was the model for Scarlett O'Hara's Tara, and stories laced with truly black humor.

Their voices are filled with suspense as the plots of the stories are quickly developed, but there are also touches of humor which is characteristic of scary tales from the oral tradition. The stories are scary - but not too scary - so that this audio presentation is satisfactory fare for middle graders to adults.
