This is a story about a boy and his dog. And I'm telling you right now: The dog does not die.
The coming-of-age genre is full of the corpses of good dogs. Where the Red Fern Grows, Old Yeller, Marley and Me, Endurance, White Fang, and even the Odyssey sacrifice dogs to character arc. But not this one. The dog in this book lives to a ripe old age. The fate of the other characters however, cannot be guaranteed. John is a scared city kid growing up poor and surrounded by crime when he is transported to the Arizona desert to be raised by an aunt he's never met. Red is an old man eager to show John all the wonders of the desert. When Red is injured miles away from civilization, John must summon the fortitude and skill to keep Red alive and find help. For readers who love Wilson Rawls, Jack London, and Gary Paulson comes a new coming-of-age adventure in the spirit of Hatchet, My Side of the Mountain, The Indian in the Cupboard, The Incredible Journey, and the Nick Adams stories. Outdoorsmen of all ages won't want to miss this thrilling adventure.
