To coin a phrase from my homeland Its wild out there. There is something unsettling about living through a time of change. We see it in our communities, our churches and our neighbourhoods. Never mind the great unravelling of the wider world that arrives in our newsfeeds every day.The patterns that once seemed familiar no longer feel dependable. Congregations that were full only a decade or two ago now wonder whether they have another decade ahead. Ministers who once felt confident find themselves asking new (quiet) questions. Long-held assumptions about faith, leadership and belonging are being tested in ways few anticipated. It would be easy to believe that these circumstances are unique to our generation. In some ways they are. Every age has its own challenges. Yet Scripture tells a different story. Again and again we meet people called to follow God into futures they cannot yet see. Abraham leaves home. Israel wanders through the wilderness. The disciples leave their nets. The early Church discovers the Gospel travels far beyond assumed boundaries - and causes anxiety. Perhaps change is not the exception to faithful discipleship. Perhaps it has always been its context. This book has several tending spaces. Firstly, conversations with ministers, congregations and Christian leaders over three decades in active ministry. Many of those conversations wrestled with the questions above. Second, my own doctoral studies in Missional Leadership, through Fuller Seminary from 2009-2015, under the provocative and wise supervision of Alan Roxburgh and Mark Lau-Branson. And thirdly, the arrival into Australia in 2026 for several months of quiet ministry engagement. During the early weeks I received an invitation to address a national gathering of Uniting Church leaders. My immediate response was fear. Abject fear. What have I got to say I know nothing. I have just left serving three congregations, and there were people I could not get out of the same pew for four years! I can't talk about change I haven't made it happen! As this book will point out, a fear response is not a bad place to start as long as we recognise it. The short, and amusing, reality, is that once I sat down to pull material and thoughts together much more happened than I had imagined. And so you have this book in your hands.©2026 Julian Hamilton (P)2026 Julian Hamilton Biblias y estudios bíblicos Cristiandad
