Christoph Gildenson is a simple farm boy with his head in the clouds. As do so many other youths in the Protharian Empire, he toils away in the fields of Rothmire Village while dreaming of soldiers, glory, and rising to the ranks of Destined Blades. Though the dream seems impossible, his life is thrown into chaos as Sir Griffon Nodure rides into the village. Conscription is required to battle the invading savages. Boys will be sent to wage war, and the nobleman has taken a specific disliking to Christoph.
Their battle is waged in the shadow of the terrifying Surton Spire—a mystical mountain surrounded by three twisted spines. High over the peak of the mount, a burning star welcomes the bloodshed of humanity's conflict. The heavens fall as if gods roll their dice in a game of fate, and Christoph's life is changed forever.
