When the narrator of "The Horla" sees a ship floating on the Seine, he is filled with such joy that he waves to the vessel as it passes by. In a few days, however, he begins to feel ill and has nightmares that cause him a great deal of anxiety. He soon becomes convinced that there is some other being in the house with him, but what could it be?
