Life can change in a moment—especially when your child’s future becomes uncertain.
Never the Plan is a deeply honest memoir about what happens when life takes you somewhere you never expected to go.
Diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a child, Fleur Bryant learnt early to hide her struggles, believing strength meant pushing harder and proving herself through achievement, independence, and determination. From international sailing competitions to career success, she built a life around overcoming limitations and appearing capable.
Then motherhood changed everything.
When her son Toby began struggling to walk while also losing the ability to read and write, Fleur was thrown into a world of uncertainty, medical appointments, and unanswered questions. Eventually, Toby was diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy, a rare and terminal neurological genetic disease. At the same time, Fleur was confronting the reality that her own condition had been misunderstood for years and that her mobility was deteriorating too.
Through Toby—her determined, fun-loving eight-year-old son—Fleur began to question everything she thought she knew about strength, resilience, and what it means to live a meaningful life.
With warmth, candour, and remarkable self-awareness, Never the Plan explores the pressure of holding everything together when life is falling apart, rebuilding your identity when the future you imagined disappears, and discovering that even in the hardest circumstances, life can still hold purpose, connection, possibility, and fun.
Ultimately, it is a story about family, resilience, and the choices we make when life doesn’t go to plan.
