Dourbrook is a city stitched together with brass, rain, and things no one talks about in daylight.
Steam curls through iron grates. Gaslights flicker against permanent fog. Beneath the cobblestones, old machinery hums with a rhythm too steady to ignore, like a buried heart that never stopped beating. The townsfolk pretend not to hear it. Pretend not to notice when reflections move on their own, or when a familiar voice sounds just slightly… off.
Then people begin coming home wrong.
A husband stands in the doorway, smiling too long before he speaks. A shop girl forgets the street she’s worked on her whole life. Neighbors wave with borrowed warmth, their eyes empty as darkened windows. Something is replacing the living with careful imitations, mimics wearing human lives like secondhand coats.
Mason Storme is one of the last men in Dourbrook who still trusts his instincts. A weary officer with a stubborn sense of right and wrong, he follows the trail of disappearances into the fog… and encounters a wolf that should not exist, its bite carrying more than teeth. Black smoke floods his lungs, and Mason dies beneath a sky that never quite brightens.
His brother refuses to let him stay dead.
Jason Storme, brilliant and dangerously devoted, drags Mason back from the dark in the only way he knows how, with steel, circuitry, and forbidden designs left behind by their enigmatic Aunt Emily. Mason wakes changed. Stronger. Sharper. Something else coiled deep inside him, whispering in a voice that sounds like his own.
Now he hunts the mimics wearing his neighbors’ faces, even as the thing within him strains against its cage.
Because Dourbrook was built over a secret that was never meant to wake.
And the deeper Mason digs, the more he fears the monsters replacing the townsfolk are only the beginning.
