Pather Panchali is a great Bengali novel written by Bibhutibhushan Bandhopadhyay in 1928. Satyajit Ray made a movie based on this novel in 1955. The movie became a milestone in the history of Indian cinema and received accolades internationally. The various situations in the family of a poor brahmin called Harihar Roy as a backdrop - the story is told through two kids called Apu and Durga. The writer tried to record the world seen through the eyes of kids unadulterated by adult condescension. The social environment is all-embracing: work and holidays, religious festivals, daily worship and the grim rites of death. Maddibhatla Suri (1920-1995) has translated the novel into Telugu.
