One day, he decides to explore the inn, and when one room catches his fancy, it leads to a terrifying encounter that he cannot explain. Stephen Critchelow masterfully builds the tension of M. R. James' short story, employing an early matter-of-factness that increases in intrigue before dissolving into fright as Thomson comes face-to-face with the truth that lives inside that room.
