In 1847, Nauvoo, Illinois is the fastest growing city in the United States. Finally, the Mormons have found a safe place to put down roots and grow. Their numbers expand as flocks of people migrate to be baptized into the Church of Latter-Day Saints.
The temple is built and dedicated. City streets are mapped out, and commerce seems to be thriving.
There is much cause for concern when rumors of an illegal counterfeiting operation threaten their peaceful way of life. Many of the wives want to believe there has been some kind of mistake but know their security is tenuous at best as tensions rise.
On a cold February night, a blood thirsty mob rides into Nauvoo setting the town ablaze. As their city burns, the wives and children have no choice but to flee across the frozen Mississippi River. Their husbands and sons stay behind and battle an angry militia.
The survivors have seemingly lost everything but still hold hope in their hearts when God directs them to head west.
