George Eliot
‘Perfect love has a breath of poetry which can exalt the relations of the least-instructed human beings.’
Published in 1861 to immediate commercial success, Silas Marner is George Eliot’s profound exploration of religion, industrialisation and community.
Set in an impoverished North England town in the early nineteenth century, Eliot’s novel follows the titular character of Silas Marner, a humble and pious weaver. After being betrayed by a close friend and consequently shunned by his congregation, Silas’s life is in tatters. Heartbroken and his faith shattered, he has no option: he must leave and start anew. Settling in a rural town in the Midlands, Silas withdraws into a reclusive life, absorbed in his craft and largely cut off from his neighbours. But when a young girl unexpectedly wanders into his house one bitterly cold night, Silas’s life is changed forever. Beautifully written and deeply affecting, Silas Marner is a moving tale of grief, redemption and second chances.
George Eliot (1819 – 1880), the penname of Mary Ann Evans, was an English novelist, poet and translator. She is often regarded as one of the key writers of the Victorian era, and is renowned for her realism, narrative voice and rich descriptions of the English countryside. Deeply influenced by the liberal and intellectual circles of the time, Eliot’s work was often politically astute. She remains one of the most influential writers in literary history.
