Eight million people ride her subway line. Not one of them has looked at her in fifteen years. Then something came up out of the tunnel.

Frankie, 39, works the overnight at the 168th Street station. Bulletproof glass, four-inch ledge, two cameras that have been out of focus since 2016. Her ex took the coffee maker and left a hoodie on the bathroom door. Her mother calls on Sundays to mention that Cousin Angela with the teeth got engaged. Frankie is not sad about any of it, which is the most damning thing she can say about two years of her life.

At 2 AM a group corners a woman on her platform. Before the cops can bother showing up, a man walks out of the tunnel—too wide, too calm, too much—puts himself between them like a wall in a doorway, and then kneels down to check her hands.

Frankie hits the intercom. How do I get in touch with you?

You will not. I will come back.

Steve comes back. With coffee, in a dented thermos, centered on her ledge with the handle turned toward the glass. He has opinions about pigeon parliamentary procedure. He considers moths unpunctual. He breaks into her apartment to fix her stove and does not mention it, because the stove was a safety concern and that is all there is to say about the stove.

He is also four hundred and twenty-nine years old, from Crete, and the face he's wearing is not his.

Under the subway there's a labyrinth, and in it there's a community the city stopped counting—an old soldier who still owes a dead sergeant for a pair of gloves, a woman who navigates in total darkness, a pharmacist's assistant who checks your pulse instead of saying hello. Steve carries their water. He has for thirty years.

Now the mayor wants their tunnel. And a woman who has spent fifteen years being invisible is about to find out that nobody watching you is the most useful weapon she's ever had.

He'll outlive her by centuries. He knows it. He's choosing it anyway.
