The Amazons, a fascinating exploration of the legendary women-warriors who captured the Greek imagination. Rothery draws on classical texts, folklore, anthropology, and comparative histories to trace the myth’s evolution—and to ask: how much of the legend is rooted in fact?
From the ancient Greek world through the reaches of Asia, Africa, and even the Americas, Rothery charts how the Amazon myth adapted across cultures and epochs. He examines geographical claims, social structures, ritual practices, and the psychological symbolism behind the enduring image of the warrior woman. Along the way, he ponders the tension between male-dominated societies and the cultural “otherness” embodied by the Amazons.
This audiobook is equal parts scholarship and storytelling. Rich with speculative insight and literary reflection, it invites listeners to reconsider the line between history and myth, and to rediscover the potency of a figure who continues to inspire and provoke.
