This tale weaves faith, horror, fantasy, and historical detail into the sodden marshes of Mirebridge, where seven women have died in seven weeks beneath the chapel altar—hands consumed by inner fire, eyes turned milky white—while the bells ring day and night untouched by mortal hands. Lord Stephern, a massive knight of a Crusader House bound by oath to the Church, and Sir Bessian, his keen-eyed and articulate companion, arrive at Father Berengar’s summons to conduct a deliberate investigation. They examine the bodies, interview the bereaved, and follow fresh tracks into the fog, only to face root-wraiths beneath an ancient oak that breathes like a living thing. Their efforts are hampered by Lady Horst’s lawful claim to the land, her armored guards, and her open disdain for the Church’s tardy response, creating friction between ecclesiastical duty and noble prerogative, prayer and practical security. A measured story of evidence, conviction, and steadfast resolve against an old, marsh-born evil.
Historical fantasy of faith and duty: knights investigate bell-tolled murders in Mirebridge amid Church-noble strife and marsh-rooted horror.
