One man waved the flag of Israel above a sign that read, “Say Yes to Jesus”. “Shout if you love Jesus!” someone in the crowd yelled. “Shout if you love Trump!” someone answered in response. Once inside the Capitol, the rioters prayed in the Senate chamber.
Throughout his presidency, Donald Trump sought to weaponize American Christianity and use it for his own political benefit. But he could not have done so without the willing assistance of church leaders who were seduced by the prospect of wielding political power in their battle to win the culture war.
