Marc Thompson handles this steam-punk adventure with verve. His pacing is slow and clear, for those little ears. He maintains a serious, thoughtful tone; after all, these kids' 19th-century America is no laughing matter. Most importantly, Thompson gives the three main characters their own distinct voices.
