Winter Wedderburn longs for something remarkable to happen. His comfortable life offers little excitement, so he pours his attention into orchids and dreams of discovering a specimen unlike anything known to science.

Then an unidentified orchid begins to thrive in his greenhouse. Its strange aerial roots disturb his housekeeper, but Wedderburn sees the possibility of discovery and perhaps even scientific recognition. As the plant develops, Wells steadily transforms an ordinary domestic setting into something increasingly uneasy. The greenhouse becomes hotter, the anticipation greater, and Wedderburn’s fascination harder to resist.

The Flowering of the Strange Orchid is an early example of H. G. Wells finding menace in the natural world rather than distant planets or futuristic machines. First published in the Pall Mall Budget on August 2, 1894, it appeared during an extraordinarily productive period when Wells was publishing short fiction in British newspapers and magazines. Other stories from 1894 included The Stolen Bacillus, The Diamond Maker, In the Avu Observatory, The Lord of the Dynamos, and The Treasure in the Forest.

Herbert George Wells was born in Bromley, Kent, England, in 1866. Before becoming a full-time writer, he studied science at the Normal School of Science in London under celebrated biologist Thomas Henry Huxley and later taught science. His biological training is particularly evident here, where the unusual properties of a living organism provide the story’s danger. Within a few years Wells would publish The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man, and The War of the Worlds, establishing a body of scientific fiction that remains enormously influential.
