Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote The Cost of Discipleship in 1937 as the Nazis tightened their control over the German church and began persecuting Christians who resisted the regime. The author epitomized the book’s call to radical obedience to Jesus’ commands in his martyrdom.
“When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.” -Bonhoeffer.
This book, The Fortune of Discipleship, is written during a different social and spiritual crisis. It's a divisive time in the United States, which this year marks its 250th anniversary as a nation. Instead of religious persecution, strong Christian Nationalism has emerged. Many in opposition to this religious movement claim fascism is on the rise. Those who wish to follow Jesus are often confused because the Truth seems obscured by the fog of a culture war. Through discipleship we discover the Truth that sets us free, and the Power to be transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ.
This is a book for men longing for friendship, for those willing to forsake tribal politics and go adventure with God. As we become his friends by exploring discipleship together, he will unite us in true fellowship. This is an invitation into Kingdom frontier. There may be a cost, but Jesus guarantees a fortune.
