Owen tried to appease his sister, Ava. He sat beside her and gently touched her shoulders. He was frustrated and sad, too, struggling to put himself together. Only six years before, their father, Michael, had sat on that same chair when Ava said she was skipping class because she did not do her homework. He let her get away with it that day.
