Darius Ford, an adventure-seeking sailor, is spearfishing on a reef in The Bahamas when he finds the remains of an old wreck. He tries to keep it a secret when he finds a strange gold box, but as the search continues, he realizes that the reef is inhabited not only by large sharks and other dangerous sea creatures, but the local fishermen believe a legendary creature that has pulled people right out of their boats also lives out there. On top of all this, the threat of thieves lurks in the background.
