The Gospel of Nicodemus is an important work of New Testament apocryphal literature, traditionally associated with the Acts of Pilate. The text expands upon the trial, crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus, giving special attention to Pilate, Jewish authorities, witnesses to Christ's innocence, and the events surrounding the Passion. It also contains the famous account of Christ's descent into Hades, where the powers of death are confronted and the righteous dead are delivered. Though not part of the canonical New Testament, The Gospel of Nicodemus had a deep influence on Christian imagination, medieval drama, art, preaching, and devotional tradition. It remains a fascinating window into the way early and medieval Christians reflected upon the Passion and the triumph of Christ over death.
