A different audio artist performs each of the five stories. A warm woman's voice lovingly tells the sad story of the nightingale who must kill herself to get one red rose for a young boy who is in love. A lighthearted male voice integrates the voices of many animals, from water rat to linnet, in the story of "The Devoted Friend".
