Discover the Knights of the Order of Saint Lazarus, who fought bravely during the crusades and helped care for the sickest people.
If you were to think of a group of crusading knights, some of the better-known Crusaders would likely come to mind, such as the Knights Templar, the Hospitallers, or perhaps even the Teutonic Knights. But the Order of Saint Lazarus? This group is not typically right on the tip of anyone's tongue—yet they were an essential and integral part of monastic Christendom.
The Lazarist knights defended the pilgrims in the Holy Land and safeguarded sacred sites. Known as the "living dead," these fearless warriors charged headlong into their terrifying foes without any concern at all for their safety. They bravely cared for and helped people with one of the most ravaging illnesses of medieval times, leprosy. Because of this, they also got known as the Leper Brothers of Jerusalem. Here, you will learn the exciting history of this brave and bold order of knights—in its entirety!
