From bestselling author Meagan Church comes a haunting exploration of identity, motherhood, and the suffocating grip of societal expectations that will leave you questioning the lives we build—and the lies we live.

They called it hysteria. She called it survival.

Lulu Mayfield has spent the last five years molding herself into the perfect 1950s housewife. Despite the tragic memories that haunt her and the weight of exhausting expectations, she keeps her husband happy, her household running, and her gelatin salads the talk of the neighborhood. But after she gives birth to her second child, Lulu's carefully crafted life begins to unravel.

When a new neighbor, Bitsy, moves in, Lulu suspects that something darker lurks behind the woman's constant smile. As her fixation on Bitsy deepens, Lulu is drawn into a web of unsettling truths that threaten to expose the cracks in her own life. The more she uncovers about Bitsy, the more she questions everything she thought she knew—and soon, others begin questioning her sanity. But is Lulu truly losing her mind? Or is she on the verge of discovering a reality too terrifying to accept?

In the vein of The Bell Jar and The Hours, The Mad Wife weaves domestic drama with psychological suspense, so poignant and immersive, you won't want to stop listening.

Me ha gustado muchísimo lo bien que trata esta autora los aspectos psicológicos de un ama de casa americana en los años 50.

una historia psicológica muy buena!

This book is probably the biggest reason I blind-read anything I come across now. 😭

Halfway through this book, I genuinely had no fucking idea what was going to happen. Was Lulu going to kill someone? Was someone else the bad guy? Was she actually onto something? Why was she so obsessed with watching her neighbors through the windows, and what the hell were they hiding?

And that's basically the setup: Lulu is a 1950s housewife who becomes increasingly fixated on her new neighbor, Bitsy, because something about her picture-perfect life just feels off. The more Lulu digs into it, the harder it becomes to tell what's actually happening and what's happening in her own head.

I did NOT expect this book to go the way it did. And those last few pages??? 😭

The confusion throughout the whole book is exactly what made it ten times better for me. Usually, when I'm confused, I'm annoyed, but when it's done right, I LOVE not knowing what the fuck is going on.

And this one did it exceptionally well.

Loved it.

⭐⭐⭐⭐½ 4.5/5

Set in 1950s America, The Mad Wife is much more a story about women, mental health, and what happened when women refused—or simply failed—to fit into the role society had created for them.

Lulu was a very likeable and relatable protagonist, and I found myself completely invested in her story and what happened to her family. The book is well written, engaging, emotional, and filled with interesting historical details, particularly around the treatment of mental illness, lobotomies, shock therapy, and the expectations placed on housewives during that time.

I also found the information about lupus particularly interesting, especially how difficult it was to diagnose and understand at the time.

There were a few unexpected twists that genuinely caught me off guard. One in particular left me completely stunned. I won’t say anything more because it’s definitely something you should experience for yourself.

By the end, after everything Lulu and her family had been through, I felt satisfied with how the story came together.

This wasn't the book I thought I was going to listen to, but I'm very glad I did—and it’s a story that has stayed with me after finishing it.

Not what I expected, but glad I listened to it.
