A Maratha army marches on Poona. The Peshwa flees his own capital.
The Company decides to put him back on his throne, and the road that begins at Seringapatam ends at a fortress thought to be unassailable.
Major William Culpepper rides north with Arthur Wellesley, attached to the general's staff for a campaign that will cross half a subcontinent. He serves two purposes. One is line work, the kind of fighting that wins battles and fills graves. The other is more personal; the hunt for the elusive Elephant Trainer, the shadow handler who has bled the Company for years and tried more than once to put William in the ground.
The campaign moves through battle, storm, and siege before culminating at Gawilghur, the fortress in the sky. William has to navigate through the fire of command and the betrayal of one of the first officers he encountered when arriving in India. He must live through all to return to Madras and his young wife, Eleanor.
The Maratha Checkmate brings William Culpepper's India arc to its bittersweet end. Will he return to England with the woman he loves or remain forever beneath the black earth of India?
