The Company decides to put him back on his throne, and the road that begins at Seringapatam ends at a fortress thought to be unassailable.
Major William Culpepper rides north with Arthur Wellesley, attached to the general's staff for a campaign that will cross half a subcontinent. He serves two purposes. One is line work, the kind of fighting that wins battles and fills graves. The other is more personal; the hunt for the elusive Elephant Trainer, the shadow handler who has bled the Company for years and tried more than once to put William in the ground.
