This is a story from the Classic Ghost Stories collection.
Ghost stories continue to be a popular audiobook genre, and this group of four stories brings together some of the best. Reader Stephen Critchelow has spent a lifetime collecting and reading works like these and, with carefully chosen music, brings a strong sense of atmosphere to the recordings.

This deliciously spooky tale culled from renowned British author and scholar M. R. James’ lauded 1904 collection, Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, finds the employee of a university museum mesmerized by a mezzotint, a metal engraving depicting a heavily contrasted image, that inexplicably changes shape to unlock the mystery surrounding a lurid crime that occurred many years prior.
Stephen Critchelow turns in a hypnotic, atmospheric performance that perfectly suits James’ austere yet powerfully evocative prose in this spine-chilling listen.
