I picked up The Open Era almost on a whim, and it ended up being one of the books that surprised me the most in the best possible way. Even though it doesn't seem like it at first, tennis is really just the backdrop for the story. At its core, this is a novel about anxiety, personal growth, friendship, identity, and learning to respect and love yourself before jumping into a relationship just for the sake of it.

Austin felt incredibly human to me. His strengths and flaws make him easy to relate to, and by the end I found myself caring much more about how he was feeling than about whether he won or lost his matches. What I loved most was how, while I was reading, I kept imagining a completely different ending. When I finally reached the last page, I realized the one the author chose was actually the best possible ending for this story, leaving the characters with plenty of room to keep growing.

Me he leído The Open Era casi por impulso, y ha acabado siendo uno de los libros que más me han sorprendido para bien. Aunque no lo parezca, el tenis es solo una excusa para contar la historia. En realidad, habla de ansiedad, crecimiento personal, amistad, identidad y de aprender a respetarse y quererse a uno mismo antes de lanzarse a una relación solo porque sí.

Austin me ha parecido un protagonista muy humano, con virtudes y defectos que hacen muy fácil identificarse con él, y he acabado más interesado en cómo se sentía que en si ganaba o no los partidos. Lo que más me ha gustado es que, mientras leía, me iba imaginando un final muy distinto al que acaba teniendo y, al terminar, me he dado cuenta de que este es, en realidad, el mejor final posible para esta historia, porque deja a los personajes con mucho camino por recorrer.
